comment on Chris's post
To comment on what Chris had wrote I believe his definition was accurate. The idea that “pragmatism is a way to think about theories and experience that derives truth from evidence,” seems to be a legitimate effect of pragmatic thought. And this is a good effect. The whole goal of each one of our fields of study attempts to “derive truth from evidence” in order to progress our understanding and increase our power over nature. The fact that reality is constantly in flux makes this task extremely difficult however. Pragmatism is a way around this obstacle of change. Pragmatism finds truths and “does this without being limited by these truths, not viewing them as absolute truths. Instead, pragmatism views these truths as flexible truths.” The idea that truths are flexible seems to contradict contemporary theory about truth as a constant in flux. Pragmatism however, claims that truth is a constant in flux which implies truth can change and flex to serve its specific purpose. I like Pragmatism and think that it may be the most productive way to examine and understand reality.
