What is Darwin implying when he refers to “whatever the cause may be of each slight difference in the offspring from their parents-and a cause for each must exist-it is the steady accumulation, through natural selection, of such differences, when beneficial to the individual, that gives rise to all the more important modifications of structure…?” (Darwin pg107) It seems like he is implying that a more complex structure exists overtop natural selection. Natural selection it seems is the way to root out beings that are not developing in the manner by which nature intended. It is almost as if nature is selectively breeding on its own. Saying that this is the case, what can we imply from this? Did nature deliberately evolve humans? If so, was it for any specific reason? These questions are far beyond our understanding at this point but it is interesting to ponder. Darwin even states, “Our ignorance of the laws of variation is profound. Not in one case out of a hundred can we pretend to assign any reason why this or that part differs, more or less, from the same part in the parents.” (Darwin pg105) Whatever is going on here with the construction and evolution of species through natural selection is absurd and intensely captivating.
