How can we be sure that utilitarianism is a good system of belief? For example, Mcdonalds is an establishment for the people. It is affordable, convenient, tasty, and provides jobs for many people. At the same time, McDonalds is nutrient deficient, abundant in fats, and bad for the environment. So where do we draw the line in establishing what is truly good for us? Although Mcdonalds provides many jobs for the people, it also harms them by distributing fats that clog the arteries of millions. How should we look for goodness; individually or on the whole? It seems as though it is hard to say. Utilitarianism is in theory a positive outlook but it may be too optimistic in its ability to construct well defined truth with respect to true “goodness.”
It is very important to take from utilitarianism that it isn’t all about oneself. Egotistical outlook and utilitarian outlook must be balanced and used situationally to create the most happiness I believe. At one moment it may be of great value to look out for your own well being, but another moments success may rest upon the cohesion of the masses. Overall, I give Mills a polite two finger clap for effort.
