"There are many who consider as an injury to themselves any conduct which they have a distaste for, and resent it as an outrage to their feelings." (Mill 86) This method of interpretation seems to cause a lot of problems between people. I know my personal beliefs and feelings have created these problems and I know other people’s feelings and beliefs have done the same. So why do we create these problems? In retrospect, most of these emotional troubles are trivial and unnecessary yet we allow them to become bigger than they ever needed to be. The whole reason I pursued philosophy was because I noticed that it helped reduce my emotional issues. However it didn’t reduce the troubles other people had with me.
All my life people have controlled and judged me and for a long time I cared and tried to correct myself when I identified a problem that arose during these interactions. However, through the course of my study of philosophy I realized that no one’s opinion is any better than anyone else’s opinion which in turn created a new species of problem in my true lack of care for others feelings. I can’t say that this has helped me or harmed me or what it has in store for me. All I can say is that it happened and that it affects me to a degree by which I have yet to understand.
