Comte claims that "In the present condition of mental development, the sciences are not directly applicable to the arts"(41). My question is what would that look like?
I recently took a Chemistry of art course here at VWC and i was wondering if that would be the coming together of science and the arts? In the course we learned about the chemistry of paints and glazes, and how the different techniques of ceramics, painting, and sculptor are affected by the different chemicals are used. We even went to the Chrysler museum to see what chemicals are used to restore old damaged paintings. Would this not be the coming together of science and the arts????

I think that when considering this question, it is important to consider that Comte was not seeing the future we live in now. Considering that fact, I am inclined to say that what you talk about is a coming together of the science and the arts, especially on the aesthetic level that we primarily see art for. The reason being, if the painting were not "old" we would have no need to restore them, so clearly by coming up with a science of restoring old artwork, we are expressing a need to not only restore, but enhance the original piece, because the restoration will never be like the original. It may even be better.
ReplyDeleteSo I would say yes.
