As a person who plays video games, I would have to disagree that they are intrinsically the seat of some necessary evil i.e. parents using it to keep their kids distracted. I mean, this may be the case with a lot of families, but video games themselves are not the problem. At least not particularly so, because I would argue that some are mindless crap which are only meant for entertainment and nothing else...
However, you're right. Parents. Parents have a responsibility when it comes to video games. I mean, my step-father was a big gaming person and that is really when I got into it, but he and my mom were very adamant about when we needed to stop playing and eat dinner and that we were not allowed to play video games during the week. My time on the computer was limited as well and even though I loved to read, I still was required to read at least once a day for an hour if possible. As far as video games go, I have a new one sitting in my draw right now that I have not touched because I have had a lot of school work, and I am getting ready to pick up a new one today. I hope to get the time to play it, but because of the discipline bread into me, I know that realistically, any time I spend playing video games is time not spent on my homework.
I could continue about how some video games definitely stimulate strategy and thought...but I won't go there.
