What caught my eye and I kept referring back to it throughout the reading was the quote at the beginning or Gadamer's fortune cookie message. It said: "Sometimes to understand the present, one needs to study the past."(382) This fortune cook message made me think. . . it is true. It not only applies to philosophy, but to many other things too; such as life.
Why are things the way they are now? . . . you have to look at our history or past and figure out what happened to make things this way. For example, if one asks: Why are we at war? You must look back to September 11, 2001 and learn that we were attacked by terrorists. We are fighting a war against terrorism.
In philosophy, to understand more recent philosophers, you have to look back and study the past philosophers and what was going on in history at that time. The past can help you understand many things that are occurring right now, in the present.
